Kintsugi Yourself
Kintsugi is a Japanese art that goes beyond the physical aspect of repairing ceramics using a mix of lacquer and powdered gold.
As a philosophy, Kintsugi teaches us to embrace all our life traumas and wounds. It also inspires us to celebrate our "imperfections" and break free from our obsession with perfectionism. Learning to accept our "flaws" is a process that leads anyone to a sense of peace and fulfillment.
Joseph Pilates' method has had the same effect on many people worldwide. Not only does it allows you to learn to love, respect, and understand your body, but it has the potential to improve your life and radically enhance your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
“The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.”
by Joseph Pilates
Pilates is not just about great posture and a rock-hard core, nor is Kintsugi just the art of repairing ceramics. Both represent Healing, a transformation process, and a perfect technique to find uniqueness and see the beauty within.
Kintsugi Pilates sessions are tailored exercises that focus on your inner experience and expand your internal awareness. We GUIDE and EMPOWER individuals to reconnect with their bodies and return to life. By practicing Kintsugi Pilates at your own pace, YOU are PRIORITIZING YOURSELF, LOVING and CARING your body, choosing HEALTH, and taking action to LIVE happily in your own skin.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”

FAQ
-
How long is the trial session? The session itself will be 50 to 55 mins with an additional 5 to 10 minutes for assessment/ counseling.
-
How much time in advance should I arrive before my session? You may arrive 5 minutes ahead of your scheduled session.
-
What should I wear and bring? When it comes to Pilates wardrobe, all genders should stick to the same rules: breathable, comfortable, lightweight, form-fitting, and modest. The key to Pilates is your form. Your instructor will need to assess your body alignment and symmetry to see if any areas need improvement. You also need to wear stretchy materials to help you exercise without restraint. Loose, baggy clothing will not only make it difficult to move but also prevent the instructor from observing your form. Also, many positions involve legs and torsos in the air. Clothes that are too baggy may fall or ride up and make you uncomfortable and expose more than you want to the class. Bring: Small towel. Water bottle
-
Can I bring my baby to the session?Yes! Please send us a message on the chat box or email us, so we can explain to you where to leave the stroller before coming up to the 2nd floor where the studio is. In the studio, we have a designated area where babies up to 8 months can play and rest while you have your "Me Time". Older children are welcome, but please be aware the studio has heavy equipment and they are not children-friendly.
-
Can I take my sessions in English or Spanish to practice the language?Yes! And don't worry, anatomy terms are usually new to people in any language. Please send us a message to inform us what language you would prefer on the day of your trial.
-

Which is recommended if pregnant, Yoga or Pilates? If you are pregnant, first of all, consult with your doctor before trying any workout. An experienced instructor can adapt classes to be safe and effective. Both Yoga and Pilates are safe and helpful prenatal and postnatal. Pilates may be beneficial for those who are trying to get pregnant. The focus on core strength helps women develop muscles that aid in delivery. It's also great for a faster recovery postpartum. Yoga is an excellent option for women looking to focus on stress relief and managing anxiety .

What's the difference between Pilates and Yoga? While Pilates and yoga are different practices, here are some things they have in common: Both have physical and mental health benefits. Both are best done with trained instructors to achieve proper form. Both are low-impact workouts and gentle on the joints. They both primarily use body weight to build strength. ( If mat Pilates) Both practices build core strength, improve posture and balance, and increase flexibility. They both focus on breathing and require mental focus. Here are some key differences: The Spiritual Focus. Yoga has more of that element to it. At the same time, Pilates focuses on breathing and connecting the mind and body, but it is not a spiritual practice. Alignment. Sometimes, it may be more difficult to practice yoga when a body has imbalances and going through pain. In that case, Pilates may be a better option first to faster balance recovery and improve posture. Rehabilitation. Pilates is suitable for rehabilitation from injuries or surgery. Equipment. Both workouts can be done without any equipment, but when used, it's totally different. If you are looking for a faster improvement, for sure, Machine Pilates is your choice. Why? Because with the support of the springs and a qualified instructor, you can achieve your goals faster than just using your body weight. Core Strength. Both practices strengthen the body in its wholeness, but yoga focuses more on the arms and legs. In Pilates, you will develop the core muscles, including the back, abs, hips, and gluteus. But ultimately, it all goes down to what you need, your body limitations, and fitness and health goals. What suits your body best? Why don't you try them both?

Who was Joseph Pilates?Joseph Pilates was born near Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1883. He was a sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. His drive and determination to overcome these ailments led him to study the flow of movement from stray cats, dogs, and children. He did all kinds of trainings in order under the influence of his father, gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, skiing, diving, boxing, and bodybuilding. In 1912, Joseph Pilates traveled to England. When World War I broke out, he and other German nationals were interned in a camp on the Isle of Man. While there, he taught and practiced his physical fitness program- It was in the camp, he began devising apparatus to aid in the rehabilitation of the disabled and sick. During the War, food was rationed, so good nutrition was incredibly sparse for the time. Consequently, many people were severely malnourished, and the risk of infection and disease was heightened. The influenza pandemic of 1918-1920, dubbed Spanish flu, claimed three times as many lives as the War itself. Most internment camps were harshly affected by the Spanish flu outbreak, and many of the internees died. However, it is widely reported that Pilates taught his Contrology exercises to over 8,000 internees during his incarceration. Quite remarkably, not a single one of them died from influenza. After the War, Joseph Pilates returned to Germany, where the German government invited him to train the new German Army. Recognizing the implications of this, he decided to leave for America. (By certain accounts, he was invited to the United States by the manager of Max Schmelling, a World Title holding boxer). On the way over to the United States, Joseph met Clara, who soon became his wife. In 1926 Joseph and Clara Pilates set up the first Pilates studio in New York City. A varied and diverse population frequented the Studio, including the elite of New York society, circus performers, gymnasts, and dancers- It was mainly the dance community and luminaries such as George Balanchine, Ted Shawn, Martha Graham, and many other lesser-known dancers who indeed recognized the value of this work and Joseph Pilates' inherent and deep understanding of the workings of the human body. In 1945, Pilates published his most notable book, Return to Life Through Contrology. In this book, Pilates presented his principles for creating a healthy mind and body and documented the 34 Contrology exercises that embody the classical method of Pilates as it is known today. This, alongside other notable work, like Pilates by Rael Isacowitz and Pilates Anatomy by Rael Isacowitz and Karen Clippinger. Pilates continued to work in his New York studio teaching and developing his Contrology exercises until he died in 1967 at 83. After that, his wife Clara kept the legacy of Joseph Pilates alive by continuing with his teaching until she died in 1977, aged 95.

I started these lessons at an extremely low point: I had just turned 32 and had injured myself lifting free weights. The doctor I saw cautioned me against continuing weight lifting at least until I had done more to strengthen some of my smaller muscles and tendons to avoid similar injuries in the future. Discouraged and in pain, I decided to switch to Pilates. The experience has been life-changing. In only about eight months, I’ve seen immense positive changes in my posture, alignment, and body awareness. I’ve even lost some weight! I couldn’t imagine not working with my instructor. 10/10 would recommend..
One great point is that my instructor understands how to help me work through certain challenges that come with having scoliosis. Also, the words of encouragement are always appreciated.

Kintsugi Pilates gives you a session personalized for what your body needs and can do now. It is challenging, but is not stern, making it easy to continue practice. The instructor is warm, patient, encouraging, any always with a sunshine smile.
My sessions are first thing in the morning on Thursdays, and so I am very happy and fully of energy on Thursdays! My job from a year and a half ago has me pasted to my seat in front of a computer for 8 hours with virtually no conversation, in a very stressful work environment. The effects on my body are stiffness, tightness and not being able to circulate the air through my body very well. Kintsugi Pilates is helping me to discover areas of my muscles that should move but hasn’t in a long time, and to discover ways to release stress and create more spaces between the stiffness I have accumulated. I feel that the exercise are helpful for me to rediscover where my true center is, and to know when I am overstraining (both physically and mentally).
